This week we have two signs, both aimed at doing the same thing; building friendships. We, at the Melbourne Welsh Church, think that church is all about community, church is all about relationships, church is all about you!
Over the past few weeks the church has been open during the day (we've had an art exhibition) and we've had people dropping in (to see the paintings). Some of the nice people from the offices across the road came by and mentioned how they like the signs - so I decided to give them one of their own.
"Hey you! Over the road, this sign is for you!"
Church is all about community, church is all about relationships, church is all about them!
The other side of the sign is for the Café across the road. Badger vs Hawk is a little place just up the street. The staff are friendly, the coffee is excellent and the food is good. I went in there for a sandwich the other day. The barista and I talked as I waited and I said that I worked at the church over the street. "We love your signs," he said, "We Facebook them every week."
So, I thought, why not remind the world that Badger vs Hawk is over the road. Who knows when I will want a sandwich, or a party catered for.
"Mentions in the Bible, Badger vs Hawk. 12 - 3 Badger wins."
Church is all about community, church is all about relationships, church is all about them!
The Rev. Elfed Ap Nefydd Roberts, my principle in theological college, reminded his students that, "Everybody wears a sign that says 'Notice Me!'"
One day, out of the blue, he asked us the name of the girl who cleaned our rooms. "Everyone is important", he said, "And you should notice them all." From the cleaners (mine was called Siân) to the professors and all the people in between, everyone is important.
This is embodied in my favourite saying -
"Everybody counts or nobody counts."
In this church, everybody counts - yes, even the ones over the road.
